What
qualifications do you have to have to teach Pilates? You have to have a recognised qualification through the OCR Examining
Board, or through a recognised body such as the Institute of Pilates. I have gained the
Basic Fundamental Matwork Pilates Course through the Institute of Pilates in London. Please do ask to see my certificates.
Do
you have to have any previous experience? No - I ask you to come along to the Introduction for Beginners
first. From then on you will work your way through the levels progressing at your own speed.
What
is the difference between Yoga and Pilates? Although in many ways they are similar the main difference is that you are practising
exercises and continual movements in Pilates whereas Yoga tends to involve moving into and holding static postures. Pilates
is also very progressive - you will start off doing the exercises at a very basic level and as you progress and become stronger
so the exercises will become more challenging and difficult. Who can attend? Do I have to be at a
certain fitness level? One of the best things about Pilates is that it is suitable for anyone - regardless of age or fitness
level as you attend the classes and progress at your own speed. I will ask you to complete a health questionnaire for my records
and just to make sure that you don't have anything that can be made worse by attending Pilates classes.
How big are the
classes? The classes will be small - there will be no more than 14 people per class. This allows them to be more personal
and means you can get as much out of them as possible. Can I attend classes if I am pregnant?
I am qualified to teach Pilates
for Pregnancy but I will ask you to seek advice and approval from your doctor before considering you for a class. Once
you have been given the go ahead I will then discuss the classes with you and modify the exercises accordingly. However, It
is important that we remain in close contact throughout the classes. How soon after birth can I start practising Pilates?
You can start doing very
gentle movements within hours of giving birth depending on the type of birth you have but it is strongly advised that you
seek information on correct exercises from a professional first (doctor or physiotherapist specialising in post-natal care).
Then before you move on to more intense exercises it is recommended that you wait for your 8 week check from the doctor so
he/she can give you the go ahead to start exercising more normally again.
What
should you wear? Please wear something stretchy and comfortable that allows you to move freely (such as tracksuit
bottoms and a t-shirt). You can go bare foot or wear socks. What do you need to bring?
Just
bring yourselves! Mats and equipment are provided. How long do classes
last? Classes run for 50 minutes and one-to-one sessions run for 45 minutes.
How
can I pay? By cash or cheque. You will be asked to sign up for a block of classes in advance.
